Dajae Coleman was shot dead in Evanston Saturday night. He was 14.
  • The Evanston Township High School freshman that everybody called “Dae Dae” was a youth sports standout, a good student and hard worker who landed his first job at the Evanston community center this summer.
  • “He wasn’t one of those guys,” Dajae’s father, Richard Coleman. “He wasn’t someone who you’d think would get killed like this. But really, in the society we’re living in he actually was … one of the good ones, the innocent ones that leave early.”
  • On Saturday, Dajae asked his father for permission to go to a party with his pals that night.
“He told me where it was. I said, ‘OK, but don’t be sitting around there on the street. Don’t go wandering. Call me after the party. Don’t walk,’ ” Richard Coleman said. “He said, ‘OK, Dad. I’ll call you.’ … And he never called me back.”
At about 10:30 p.m., Dajae was fatally shot in the 1500 block of Church Street. Friends say he was leaving a party when he was shot. About 45 minutes later, Dajae’s mother, Tiffany Rice, called Coleman and told him to come to the police station.

  1. This article effects the African American community as whole. All of the foolishness that is going on i becoming unacceptable, Chicago is officially the murder capital and i find that an issue.
I think we need a reincarnated MLK, with the same voice, with the same message, but the million dollar question is, will it change anything?

    1. I agree with you all the way because its and embarassement to go somewhere and someone ask you where you from and you say chicago and they instanly give you a stale face like yea i wont be hanging with her/him. and MLK would be a good hero because he fought for all of us to become one nation and to share schools, etc.

    2. I agree with you but I don't think MLK voice will stop anything. They're going to do what they want which is destroying our community.

      Delete
    3. I was agreeing with you until you mentioned MLK. Just because he gave African Americans that push doesn't mean he can change the world alone. It'll take more than one man to fix a problem that was happening years before he was born. Yes, there will be change if everyone put their heart into it.

    4. I don't think we need reincarnated MLK.Because one man nor woman cant do this alone. because its not just one man out here killing people.Instead of people out here joining these gangs that need to be joining some of these group to better the community like neighborhood watch or help get these little kids off the street into some after school programs or something

    5. i agree with you not only because its embarrassing, but its making our community look worse and people don't understand what these families have to face when there child in danger.

  2. Articles like these degrade the black community and makes others think of us like animals; As if they already do not have this thought.

I think It is time out for modern day heros , saviours , etc. People will do what they what to do even when told the correct way , They will still go astray.

    1. I agree because whether its each and every day or each and every week wat do we see on tv, a young black person killed/stabbed/robbed. its just ridiculous that we have to be called things like that. and the mordern day hero being a time out i agree with as well because at the end of the day people still do whatever they want.

    2. I totally agree with you. And that is a shame. We is the only race that is out here killing each other. And the only ones that is out here proud about doing it too.

      Delete
    3. I also think this as well because we are the most stereotype race. We are already called monkeys and other names as well, so these articles are proving them right.

  3. These types of articles effect the african american community completely because were already known for killing eachother and it just goes to show how much respect another african american has for us. Alot of young african americans that have beem killed have not done anything they were innocent bystanders this violence makes us look like monsters.
I think we need Rodney King because maybe he can tell others what's gone happen next and how bad it makes us look. But with the way some of these people act i still don't think it would help.

    1. I agree with you on the first answer but for the second question i don't think Rodney King is someone that black people would look up to or let along listen to just because he was assaulted because of his race he did tell his people to basically "Just get along" in acceptance of how the world was never going to be different.

  4. Articles like that effect African American communities because it make it hard for teens to do things. We can't walk down the street without a fear of something happening. Dajae only went to a party expected to come back home as well as his family. People don't want to live in our communities anymore because it's getting worse.
I don't believe there's a modern day hero to fix our community. Our community is too much. People are killing each other for no reason and the other reasons are on "accident" or gang related. I don't think someone wise words can get to everyone. They're going to listen then go shoot. Just like they're going to do the extra school hours and they're still going to do what they want.

    1. There's always a solution to a problem. However, you are correct when you say, "We can't walk down the street without a fear of something happening." A lot of people do not realize that anything can happen in a blink of an eye.

  5. This makes the African American community look worse than it already is. This shouldn't have been a wakeup call when hundreds of our young people were killed because of violence before this. Our "modern day hero" should be us as a whole. Everyone should have a part in this and not look up to one person. Instead of us looking up to one person that's successful, we all can take a stand and make our community better than it is.

    1. I agree with you on both of your responses because people should have already got the message long ago and change does start with yourself.

    2. i agree on both resposes because its is already to much crime and we need to over this as african americans

      team (no lackin)

    3. i agree to both of your responses because our community getting worse everyday because someone always want to be like the next person. And if us as a whole get together, the problem can be solve.

  6. 1) This article affects the African American Community because it portrays us in the media as people who are unable to conduct themselves or don't know how to live among each other. We are looked upon as a race who is violent and out of control.

2)The Modern day hero cant be police so it would have to start at home with the person who is doing the wrong things parents. But at the end of the day no one can control some one elses actions except trying to prevent them.

    1. I disagree I feel like police can be modern day heroes. People always want to bash the police for the bad they do but never want to give them credit for the good.

  7. This article affects the African American Community because it shows us how hard it is now a days just to have fun.It Affects the community because its like you have to kill or be killed. And if this keep going on we wont have a African American Community to worry about.
I don't think we need a modern hero. what i think we need is for people in this community to do right by the people that is in this community.I feel like there a hero inside everyone, but the only thing is we don't see it. And if we cant care of the African Americans in the community who else will.

the type of hero that is needed is a father figure because most ppl dont have fathers and they look up to the things the see on tv

    1. I believe this also because now how are you going to protect your self, not without a weapon. So this makes people want to carry weapons.

But some fathers are just as worst as some of these kids but some kids do need a positive role model.

    2. What type of "modern day" hero is needed to help these situations and does this person exist? A modern day hero like Barack Obama. He was supported and he made a big change thats what we need to do support eachother

  13. 1. These types of articles are used to portray all African Americans as violent criminals. The media will always report gang violence in African American neighborhoods but won't report gang viloence in White neighborhoods

    2. The modern day heroes that we really need are the people who make the music we listen to. People are easily influenced by music. For example: when Chief Keef became famous, many people started claiming his gang. People look up to these rappers. If we had more music with positive messages we'd probably have less crime

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree with completely because they cover up things that other places do besides the East stuff of Chicago. You only hear about what's wrong in the black community. I also agree with the rappers being a modern day because a lot of people want to be them and look up to them. If the rappers say positive things and only talk about positive things, people will do better.

    2. I agree, the news and newspapers are quick to have black people and their crimes as "top stories" on the nine o'clock news and front page on the newspaper as if there the only people doing bad in the world. Its like they only want to portray us in one way and that way just doesn't apply to everyone.

      Delete
  14. 1. These types of articles deteriorate the black community a lot. It deteriorates it because 80% of the time this what you hear in the news.

2.I think the modern day hero would the president. I say the president because he can the National Guard on the street and that will lessen the killings that's going on. Having the National Guard on the streets will intimidate people on the streets.

  15. 1. These types of article effects the black community because they only add to the stereotypes that are already out there. They make all black people seem the same, like were all killers and murders which is not the case. Its sad when people can't enjoy their self without worrying about if something bad might happen, it shines a negative light on our community.

    2. The modern day hero could be anybody inside or outside the community willing to help and make a change. They don't have to be the president or anybody like that, just as long as their helping and trying to save lives. It could be a preacher from a church or police or just anybody who's willing to help. Yes I think there are still modern day heroes just not as many as before.

  16. 1. These types of article effect the black community because
it can encourage others to go out in do negative things so they can fit in or prove to their peers that they aren't scared. it also can stop positive people from going out and enjoying their selves.

    2. In today's society, the modern hero could be that person thats right there at the moment the accident happen. Or if people want to be more safer while they partying they can have security's watch over them.

t can encourage more African Americans to go out and do the same to prove to their peers that they aren't scared to do negative things. it also effect the community by stop all the positive black from going out and enjoying their selves.

  17. I think the way Chicago is today is crazy. No one cares anymore, lives are being take for no reason, and you can't even make it to see 27 in this city. This needs to stop.
